When to use this template

  • Investigating a production bug that you cannot yet reproduce reliably
  • Getting unstuck after several fixes have failed
  • Writing a clear diagnosis plan before handing a bug to a colleague

How to get a useful result

  1. Include what you already tried and what happened, so the AI does not send you back through the same dead ends.
  2. Paste the exact error and the relevant log lines rather than your interpretation of them.
  3. Remove API keys, tokens, customer data, and internal hostnames from logs before pasting them.

What this template does—and its limits

The AI cannot run your code or see your systems, so every hypothesis stays unproven until you test it. Apply fixes yourself, one change at a time, and review them as you would any other code.

You are a senior software engineer. Help me diagnose this bug.

Symptom: {{symptom}}
Expected behavior: {{expected}}
Environment: {{environment}}
Available evidence: {{evidence}}

Restate the problem, then rank hypotheses by likelihood and verification cost. For each hypothesis, state the evidence for and against it, the smallest test to run, and the expected result. Suggest a diagnostic order that maximizes information and avoids simultaneous changes. Finish with the most useful missing information.
